Why is the aorta called an elastic artery?
Its wall contains abundant elastic lamellae. They stretch during systole and recoil during diastole, maintaining forward blood flow when the ventricle is relaxed.
Loss of aortic elasticity increases systolic pressure and pulse pressure, especially with ageing.
